Kalavasos: Cyprus' First Sustainable Tourism Community

Kalavasos' distinction as Cyprus' first sustainable tourism community.

Kalavasos: Cyprus' First Sustainable Tourism Community

On October 12th, Kalavasos was proudly declared the first Sustainable Tourism Community (Sustainable HoReCa Community) in Cyprus, marking a significant milestone in the country's drive toward green development in the tourism industry. The announcement was made at a special event in the village, attended by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Kostas Koumis, Dr. Xenia Loizidou from AKTI Project and Research Centre, and other key figures including representatives from Coca-Cola HBC Cyprus.

The initiative is part of the Zero Waste HoReCa Network, a pioneering project spearheaded by AKTI that promotes sustainable practices within the hospitality and food service sectors. Over the past two years, the network has significantly reduced environmental impacts by saving over 50 million liters of water and diverting 900 tons of food waste and 800 tons of recyclables from landfills. These efforts are part of a broader green transition for Cyprus' tourism industry, and Kalavasos is now leading the way, with all of its local hospitality businesses joining the Zero Waste Network.

This achievement solidifies Kalavasos as a key player in sustainable tourism, setting a benchmark for other communities in Cyprus to follow. The community’s collaboration with AKTI and local businesses highlights the importance of environmental action, ensuring that sustainability becomes a core pillar of tourism development in the region.
